 How to Create a Partition Without Formatting

The creation of a disk partition is the process of taking a portion of available hard drive space and converting it to a file system for use with an operating system. Multiple partitions may be created within one physical disk for multiple purposes such as having more than one operating system. Though an often misunderstood process, the creation of a partition in Windows Vista is an easy process that any computer user can accomplish without the need for formatting.

Instructions

1. 1. Left click the "Start" button located in the lower left side of your desktop.
   2. Left click the "Control Panel" button located on the resulting start menu.

   4. Double left click the "Administrative Tools" icon located within the control panel window.
      
   5. Double left click the "Computer Management" icon in the resulting list from Step 3.
      
   6. Left click the "Disk Management" heading in the leftmost frame of the resulting computer management window. This will show a detailed listing of your installed drives in the middle frame of the computer management window.
      
   7. Right click the drive on which you wish to create a partition, from the list of available drives within the bottom portion of the center frame. This will produce a context menu of available drive operations.
      
   8. Left click the "Shrink Volume" heading from the context menu.
      
   9. Enter an amount of hard drive space, measured in megabytes, by which to shrink the currently active partition. The amount you enter here will be the maximum size of the new partition you create.
      
   10. Click the "Shrink" button to begin the partition shrinking process. This process may take a few minutes, depending on the size of your hard drive.
       
   11. Right click the newly formed unallocated space on your selected hard drive after the completion of the shrinking process. This will once again produce a context menu.
       
   12. Left click the "Format" heading to produce the format dialog box.
       
   13. Ensure that the correct file system that you desire is selected from the file system pulldown menu, and click the "OK" button. This will begin the process of formatting the unallocated space into a usable drive partition. The newly formatted partition will also be assigned a system drive letter.
       
   14. Restart your computer upon completion of the formatting of the new partition to ensure all system-level changes go into effect.
   
   

   Tips & Warnings 

   The maximum amount of space for creating any new drive partition is always limited to the available amount of free space on the drive. If you require a partition with more space, the only option to avoid formatting while creating a new partition is to remove some of the data currently on the hard drive, thus freeing up space for a larger partition.
